Shunmugam Jayakumar (born 1939, age 70), more commonly known as S. Jayakumar, is the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore since August 12, 2004. Jayakumar, who is also an author of three books and 32 articles on constitutional law, international law, and legal education, was awarded the Public Service Star (BBM) in 1980.

2. Born in Singapore, Jayakumar graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of Singapore and was admitted to the Bar in 1964. He later furthered his education at Yale Law School and received his Master of Laws in 1966. Upon his return to Singapore, Jayakumar lectured at the Faculty of Law in the University of Singapore between the years 1964 and 1981, assuming the position as Dean of the Faculty in 1974. In his career with the university, he also served as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) and High Commissioner to Canada between 1971 and 1974.

3. In 1980, Jayakumar was elected as Member of Parliament for the Bedok Constituency, a seat he has held ever since (as of 2008), even after it became part of the East Coast Group Representation Constituency. Since become Member of Parliament, he has held various combination of ministerial positions:
- Minister of State for Law and Minister of State for Home Affairs in 1981;
- Minister for Labour in 1984;
- Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Law in 1985;
- Minister for Law and Minister for Home Affairs in 1988; and
- Minister for Law and Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1994.

4. In a cabinet resuffle in August 2004 when Lee Hsien Loong became the new Prime Minister, Jayakumar was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Law. He took over the role as Coordinating Minister for National Security from Tony Tan to oversee Singapre's counter-terrorism policies in September 2005. On April 30, 2008, Jayakumar stepped down as Minister for Law, while retaining his two other ministerial positions.[1] more... at Wikipedia
