3. Contesting under the People's Action Party (PAP) banner in the 1984 general election, Hu was elected to Parliament for the Kreta Ayer constituency,[1] a seat which he would hold until his retirement from politics in 2001. In January 1985, Hu became the Minister of Finance. According to one particularly persistent rumour since 1990, Hu, who was then the Minister for Finance, was insulted by Lee Hsien Loong, son of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and presently Prime Minister, during a pre-cabinet meeting. When S Dhanabalan, the then Minister for National Development, intervened and chastised Lee, he was said to have been slapped on the face across the table by Lee.[1] Prior to this meeting, Lee was said to have gone to Hu's office and removed a number of files without his permission.[1] In response to a demand from then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, Lee subsequently apologised to Hu, Dhanabalan, and Tony Tan Keng Yam who was also insulted in the incident. Hu had wanted to quit the Cabinet then but was persuaded to stay on. Goh, however, has denied that the incident actually happened.[1]
