The Legend that was Bruce Lee
Rejected by both Hollywood and Shaw Brothers, the timing of Bruce Lee's entry into the Hong Kong film industry could not have been more propitious. Production Manager Raymond Chow had just left Shaw Brothers to form his own Golden Harvest, and Bruce's first movie with the new company was The Big Boss. The star of the film was intended to be James Tien, then a major star in Hong Kong, but Bruce's strong performance relegated Tien to second billing.
2. Upon its release, The Big Boss became the highest grossing film in the history of Hong Kong and catapulted Bruce Lee to superstardom. But just as meteoric was his rise to fame, his fall was equally as abrupt for he died two years later, age 32, in, of all places, Betty Ting Pei's apartment at Beacon Hill Road, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong. The whole world was stunned, utterly shocked, and furious. Rumors were rife that Bruce died in the hands, or rather in the legs, of Betty.
3. The logic was simple. Bruce's one-inch punches and multi-directional kicks were legendary. No man could take him on single-handedly. And Betty was no man. Even so, Betty vehemently denied the accusation. There were only two persons at the time, and dead men tell no tales... or lies. Betty was the only one alive and to tell her side of the story, she acted in the film, Bruce Lee and I, which, far from vindicating herself, served only to fuel further speculations. For why did she have to wash up in the bathroom at the very crucial moment when Bruce Lee died on her bed? The coroner's verdict of "death by misadventure" as a result of an allergic reaction to Equagesic, a strong aspirin-based drug, causing cerebral edema (brain swelling), meant nothing. For did not Bruce himself exhort, "Empty your mind, my friend", ... be brainless.
